Speaking English in Tokyo?

I think a big problem in Tokyo will be the lack of good English spoken by the local Japanese, there will be thousands of impatient foreigners yelling loudly at shopkeepers etc, because they have no experience dealing with non English speaking people,

Tokyo is one of the places in Japan where you can usually find someone who can speak enough English to help you out, but you are right I think it will be a shock to polite Japanese when the Games are on to be confronted with rude foreigners expecting every word to be understood

Indeed, if more Japanese are able to speak and understand English then asking for directions would be easier. Otherwise, we need to learn some basic Japanese so we don't get lost.

People in central Tokyo are familiar with English, especially at some tourist spot. But if you move away from central Tokyo to some outskirt of Tokyo or other parts of Japan then it’s very difficult to communicate with local people. In this case foreigner people should understand and should mug up some basic Japanese words which will help them to explore. But when it comes to train station or some information, in Japan, they mention in English as well so that foreigners can understand.
