What's the difference between a temple and a shrine, are they different religions or the same religion?

Yes, it's a very interesting question and most people wouldn't know the difference between the two. As nobita explained, the differences are between Shinto and Buddhism. I'm sure you have heard that there are some places in Japan where Shinto and Buddhism co-exist. One good example is the Tsurugaoka Hachimangū shrine. This shrine is the most important Shinto Shrine in Kamakura but did you know that in the past, it used to be a Buddhist Temple as well? This is an interesting example on how the two religions in Japan was able to mutually exist side by side despite the differences in religion.
