The Ainus

Ever since my childhood days, I have always been a wide reader. I always go to the library to read encyclopedias and I always start at the letter A book first. When I got to reading about Japan, I read about this mysterious Ainu people of Japan. Not much have been known about them then. My question is:
1. Do they look different from Japanese?
2. If yes, whom do they look like? chinese?korean?mongols?russian/europeans?pacific islanders?
3. What about their language? To which race is it closest to?

The Japanese pushed the Ainu up Japan from the South and the Russians put pressure on them from the North, and they just manged to survive in Hokkaido
