Yes, I remember when I first read about square watermelons in the news. They've been around for a while now. It's actually relatively easy (or at least it sounds easy!) to get a square watermelon: you grow it in a square mold. I think it takes extra care and checking though, or perhaps they don't all turn out perfectly, which is why they cost so much. Saying that, certain fruit in Japan is expensive anyway, if it's thought to have an especially delicious flavor, or if it just looks perfect.
To answer your first question, as for the taste of square watermelon, it tastes exactly like any other watermelon, I believe!
