Best temples/shrines?

These forums have been awesome for getting news ideas of where to travel. One of the things I want to do is visit a bunch of temples and shrines. So I need some advice and recommendations about where to go.
Which temples and shrines do you want to go to? Are there any you've already been to that you would recommend?
I know there are some good ones in Kyoto, and that cool shrine which has the shrine gate in the water, near Hiroshima. I think there's also one in a huge park in Tokyo. It would be cool to hear about any that are hidden or particularly special for whatever reason, thanks!

In the Higashiyama district of Kyoto there is the small Okazaki Shrine which worships the Rabbit, its easy to walk past if you don't know its there. Its usually very quiet and not on the tourist path like the nearby Heian-jingu Shrine.
